Created in 1989, this year-long program brings together a select and diverse group
of high school juniors, with demonstrated leadership ability, and prepares them to
become ethical leaders committed to active community involvement.
SELECTION:
To be eligible a youth must be nominated, during the sophomore year, by an accredited
public or private high school, secure approval by the school principal, and be
academically sound. Nominated students must complete an application form and are
interviewed by a team of LJ alumni.
Approximately 50 youth selected each year, represent 35 schools in the four-county
region-Duval, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns. Participants represent a cross section of
the community in terms of gender, race, culture and neighborhoods.

PROGRAM:
During this exciting program, students attend an Opening Retreat, eight Program
Days (one per month) and a Closing Retreat. Programs are experiential in nature
with hands-on activities. Dialogues with many key community leaders provide
stimulating discussions.
YLJ participants meet students from all areas of the First Coast and develop mutual
trust and respect for each other. They gain an increased awareness of issues facing
the community, opportunities, problems and resources. Most importantly they learn
leadership skills to enable them to become responsible, ethical community leaders in
the future.
